Asia Anticipates Surge in Air Travel Demand
Asia is poised to experience a boom in air travel, and economies across the region are gearing up to capitalize on this sharp increase in demand.
According to the Airports Council International (ACI), based in Canada, air travel is projected to grow by nearly 7% over the next 25 years. To accommodate this growth, airports across the Asia-Pacific region are making significant investments to upgrade existing infrastructure and construct new airports between 2025 and 2035.
At Changi Airport (Singapore), construction of Terminal 5 officially began on May 14 and is expected to be operational by the mid-2030s. The new terminal will be:
- Built on a 1,080-hectare site
- Almost double the size of the current Changi Airport
The new terminal will increase the airport’s passenger handling capacity from:
- The current 90 million to 140 million passengers per year
- According to CNBC, Changi Airport handled 67.7 million passengers in 2024

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong stated that the decision to build Terminal 5 is driven by the long-term upward trend in air travel demand, with the bulk of growth expected in the Asia-Pacific region.
He also noted that with the completion of Terminal 5:
- Changi Airport aims to connect to 200 cities
- Up from its current 170 destinations
Previously, Hong Kong International Airport (China) launched its third runway in November last year and is currently expanding Terminal 2. The goal is to serve 120 million passengers and handle 10 million tons of cargo annually by 2035.

Suvarnabhumi Airport (Thailand) also opened its third runway in September 2024, enhancing its flight-handling capacity. A year earlier, the airport completed a new satellite terminal and now plans further expansion to increase capacity by 2027.
In South Korea, Incheon International Airport completed its “Phase 4 Expansion” in December 2024, boosting its annual passenger capacity from 77 million to 106 million.
